ONE Look Is All It Takes – Lot’s Wife Looking Back

Listen to Audio Here.

15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”

16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.

17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”

24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens.

25 Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.

26 But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Sodom and Gomorrah were known to be cities filled with many wicked people. Genesis 19:20 explains that “… Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is very grave”,. God could not tolerate their sins and had to destroy these  two cities. But God is merciful, He sent angels to warn and to bring Lot and his whole family out of the city before it was destroyed. Even though Lot hesitated, the angels grasped his whole family’s hands and rushed them out of the city safely.

The angels of God explicitly told Lot and his family not to look back, not to stay anywhere on the flat ground, but to run to the mountains. But alas! Despite the angel’s explicit command, Lot’s wife still chose to look back. One look, one look was all it took for her to become a pillar of salt.

Why did Lot’s wife choose to take that one deadly look? There’re several possible reasons as to why she looked back:. It might be because she could not bear to see her past successes of building a physical home and her physical possessions being destroyed by the burning sulfur. Or, she was too comfortably familiar with the sins and wickedness of the city. Another possible reason could be simply curiosity. And this curiosity was an outright act of defiance to the command that was given by the angels. The angels had instructed them to flee, to move forward.

I was like Lot’s wife! In the past I had an ungodly relationship.  Through the interventions of my Pastors and Christian Leaders, that relationship ended. However as I was beginning to take steps forward, I looked back. That one look caused me to spiral downwards and very soon my emotions overtook me. In no time, I was back in that comfortably familiar ungodly relationship. But I thank God through His grace and mercy I didn’t turn into an immobile pillar of salt. The only type of salt I’ve become is God’s salt and light of the world. This is all because of the angels of God, who are my Pastors and Christian Leaders who grasped my hand and helped me to move forward.

Is there any thing or any area of your life that God is revealing to you, to let go, move forward and not look back? Yes, I’m referring to the things and areas of your life that are holding you back from leading the blessed present and great future that God has intended for you. Perhaps it is a past failure, bad experience, fear, ungodly habits or even your past successes.

Indeed, we do not want to be like Lot’s wife. Move forward in the direction that God has instructed you and obey His commandments! This is because the only salt we want to be is His salt and light!

Come! Join me in this prayer:

“Dear Heavenly and Righteous Father, I thank You that You are a God of love, mercy and grace. I surrender my life to You. Lord, I will not look back. Instead I will keep moving forward in accordance to your instructions. And I only want to be Your salt and light for the world so that more may come to know of Your love and greatness. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen”
