Listen To The Right Voice- Part 1

Businessman Speaking Through Megaphone

Listen To Audio Here.

In the past few years of my faith journey, God has always brought a particular Bible passage to my mind at least one time each year. And each time, I would spend a few days or weeks pondering over and meditating on the passage, waiting upon God to reveal to me what He wanted to teach me from it. Each time, God gave me revelation and insights that empowered and encouraged me as I served Him and His church.

Today, as I spend time with God, seeking Him and His Word, He once again leads me to this particular Bible passage. Let me share with you this Bible passage that has a very significant impact on my life.

Luke 5:1-6 (NLT)
1 One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on Him to listen to the Word of God.
2 He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets.
3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push out into the water. So He sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.
4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if You say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”
6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear!

I have come to be very familiar with this Bible passage already. But I know our God can still breathe fresh life and provide new powerful inspiration through it today. I wait on God to speak to me what I believe is going to set the trajectory of my year ahead.

And here is what I receive from the Lord today…

When Jesus tells Simon Peter to go out deeper in the sea and let down his nets again, Simon acts upon the words of Jesus, even though he and the rest have toiled the whole night but caught no fish.

At the point when Simon hears the voice of Jesus giving him an instruction, he must have at the same time, heard other voices. He probably hears some ‘Negative Voices’. They may have come from within himself, telling him that it is useless to go out to fish again after an entire fish-less night of fishing. There may be ‘Negative Voices’ from his fishing partners too. They may be voicing out to him that the nets have been cleaned and kept; they are all tired; it is a waste of time to go and fish again.

‘Negative Voices’ always point us to the difficulties and impossibilities, and take us away from the will and ways of God.

Secondly, Simon may have heard some ‘Rational Voices’. These are the voices of reason. Simon’s friends may be telling him, “Just chill, mate. We were out the whole night and caught nothing! It’s not going to be any different if we go out now. Let’s just rest now and fish again some other time.”

‘Rational Voices’ are often well-meaning and keep things average and mediocre. They stop us from stepping into what God wants for us.

The third voice God shows me that may be speaking to Simon is the ‘Cynical Voice’. Some of Simon’s fishing partners may be saying to him, “What? Who is it that told you to go out to fish again? Jesus? What does he know about fishing! We are the experienced fishermen. We know the tides and times best, not him?! And you’re going to listen to him teaching you how to fish! Seriously?!”

The ‘Cynical Voice’ always undermines the One Who brings us the message. It does not trust the sovereignty of God’s Words and doubts God, preferring to look at only the present circumstances and relying on own abilities.

Negative voices. Rational voices. Cynical voices. Simon must have heard them all at the point he receives Jesus’ instruction to go out to the sea to fish again. However, he chooses to respond to the Voice of Jesus. His response probably does not make him very popular among his peers and he very likely has to bear with some scornful remarks and disdaining stares. But, because of his obedience and response to Jesus’ Words, Simon experiences an amazing miracle of a huge catch of fish. The people around him witness that too.

God is telling me today – you may not be able to shut out the voices of negativity, reason and cynicism, but you must learn to turn their volume down, and turn up the Voice of God. And, listen to the Voice of God, obey and act on the Voice of God. This is the key to stepping into the blessings and miracles God has for you.

Join me in this prayer.

“Dear God, thank You for teaching me today about the power of voices I listen to. I acknowledge that it is Your Words and Your Voice that always lead me to the best way of life. Father, help me to turn down the voices in me and around me that take me away from Your will for me. Help me to overcome my selfish liking and inclination to want to take the easy way out of things. I commit to read and study Your Word and seek Your Holy Spirit for guidance in all I do. And when You speak, I follow. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”
