Making The Best Use Of Time

Listen To Audio Here.

Ephesians 5:15-17 (ESV)
15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,
16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

What are you doing now?

Okay, I know you are listening to or reading this devotional. But what are you doing next? This may seem like a silly question, but your answer can say a lot about what you value.

How we spend our time is about wisdom. God wants us to be wise with the resources He has given us. One of the most valuable and irreplaceable commodities we have is our time. Ephesians 5:17 exhorts us to MAKE THE BEST USE of time and not act thoughtlessly or foolishly, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

I think what the Lord wills us to do with our time is clearly and simply explained by Jesus in John 9:4 & 5 (AMP/NASB)
4 We must work the works of Him who sent Me and be busy with His business while it is daylight; night is coming on, when no man can work.
5 While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.”

This is what the Lord wants us to be busy doing with our time – His business, not ours. There is an urgency too as Jesus tells us there will come a time when it is too late to carry out what God wants us to do. Jesus also says here that while He physically is in the world, He is God Who is the Light that all mankind vitally need. But what then happens after His crucifixion, resurrection and ascension to Heaven?

Paul writes in Ephesians 5:8 (NASB), telling followers of Christ, “…you were formerly in darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light”.

And Jesus tells His disciples in Matthew 5:14, 16 (NASB),
14 “You are the light of the world…
16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

So now that Jesus is seated in Heaven on the right hand of our Father and not physically on this earth, you and I who are His disciples are to be the ones shining the Light of God before all men. This is the business God wants us to be busy with. We are to use our time each day to represent Who Jesus is to the world, so that when they see our good works, they recognize that Jesus is indeed our loving and Almighty Lord and Savior, and will glorify our Heavenly Father.

How do you and I shine the Light of Jesus and lead all people to come to know He is the only way to our Father in Heaven?

The Word of God teaches us in Colossians 4:5 & 6 (ESV)
5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best of the time.
6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Here, the apostle Paul reiterates to the Colossians what he writes to the church of Ephesus in Ephesians 5: 16 & 17. We are to make the best use of the time and walk in wisdom to outsiders. To the Jews, every non-Jew was an outsider. To Christians, every non-Christian is an outsider, that is, outside the church, outside of a relationship with our Lord Jesus. We are to shine our light before them by living our life in wisdom, always speaking in kindness and with words seasoned with God’s love and truth, so that they may know Jesus Christ and He is Lord.

The Bible is so beautiful. It is truly life to those who would read it, receive it, believe it, and obey it. Today as God reveals to us His Word teaching us to live wisely by making the best use of our time to shine His Light that is in us before all people, let us obey Him.

Every morning upon waking up, I am going to thank God for the day and time He has given me. Time is God’s gift to me and each new day I have is an opportunity for me to live for God, to know Him and make Him known. As I make a renewed commitment this day to obey and carry out The Great Commission of making disciples, baptizing them and teaching them to obey God’s commands, God gives me a revelation that this begins only when this is how I daily wisely use my time – T.I.M.E. – Today I Must Evangelize. Yes, Lord, this I shall do every day of my life.

Join me in this prayer.

“Heavenly Father, I thank You for the days and time You give me. Give me the wisdom to number my days and seize every day to live for You and Your Kingdom. With each passing day, my time and opportunities to live for You and share You with others are less and I cannot afford to waste any more time. God, I thank You that I have Your Light living in me and I rise up to shine this light for all the world to see, leading them to receive the new life that is found in Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”
