Being Led By The Holy Spirit

Christians know that God can lead and guide His children. However, many believers live their lives without relying on His guidance, resulting in bad decision-making that leads to a life filled with confusion and disappointments. Why is this so?

There are two main reasons for a Christian to be in this predicament:

•    Wrong belief that he or she is not qualified or good enough to receive God’s guidance;

or

•    Ignorance on how God leads and guides His children.

Thus, a believer will mistakenly conclude that he or she cannot hear God’s voice or be led by the Holy Spirit. And as long as a person does not expect God to speak or guide him – he will not hear God’s voice as he has no expectation or faith for that.

Wrong beliefs and ignorance can be easily corrected by renewing the mind through the Word. (Romans 12:2)

As born-again believers, we can be led by the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:14 says “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God”.  This verse clearly states that all sons of God (that is, ALL believers) can be led by the Holy Spirit. It does not make the distinction that only certain believers are qualified to be led.

John 16:13 explicitly says that “… when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come”. This is written to all believers, not for special chosen ones. The Holy Spirit will guide ALL BELIEVERS!

Proverbs 20:27 says “The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart”. This verse implies that God enlightens us – He guides us – He communicates directly with our spirits through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Many Christians are waiting on God to speak with them in answer to prayer but they think He’s going to speak in their heads. This verse indicates that God is going to lead and guide us through our spirits.

Romans 8:16 says “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God”. Do note that it is the Holy Spirit that BEARS WITNESS with us, that is, our spirits.

Besides the written Word of God, the primary way that God leads His children is through the inward witness of the Holy Spirit. What is the inward witness?

It is an inward knowing, assurance, conviction or prompting in your spirit. This inward assurance or conviction gives you a sense of peace and “knowing” what to do or not to do in a particular situation. This knowledge does not come from your physical senses; it comes directly from the Holy Spirit to your spirit.

The inward witness has also been described as a green or red light on the inside letting you know whether to “go” or “stop”, whether “yes” or “no”.

I remember vividly two incidents where I was led by the Holy Spirit through the inner witness:

Incident 1

Upon graduation, it was my desire to work in the investment industry. However, no doors were opened. It seemed impossible as the industry was small and closely-knit; you needed connections to get in and I had none.

So for four years, I was in “the wilderness” – praying and crying to the Lord but to no avail. I had no understanding of being led by the Holy Spirit – I just prayed and asked God to “endorse” all the resumes that I sent out. I assumed that every job offer was Spirit-inspired. I was naïve, ignorant and ended up opening my own doors and moving from one job to the next. It was a frustrating and depressing period of my life.

Finally in my desperation, I cried out to God that I needed to encounter and know Him and to be led by Him. From that day, I started to hunger for God and He fed me through His Word. Scriptures became alive and I began to learn that I could hear and be led by the Holy Spirit.

It was a Saturday that I came across a job advertisement for a fund manager position. I gave it a cursory glance and mentally decided against applying for it as I did not meet most of the requirements – no relevant working experience, no successful track record. In addition, I had been receiving too many rejection letters in the past and had no desire to relive that experience again.

However as I pondered over the advertisement, there was an inner witness and peace in my spirit to submit my resume. It was a quiet assurance and confidence in my spirit that this was a divine appointment. So I followed the peace in my spirit and applied for the position.

Through the interview process, I discovered there were many better qualified candidates than me. In the natural, I felt lost and defeated but in my spirit there was always that inner witness and peace that God was in control. In the end, against all odds, God guided me into the job! Hallelujah!

Incident 2

Throughout my investment career, I continued to experience the leading of the Holy Spirit through the inner witness. When I obeyed and followed the inner witness, I experienced success (Isaiah 1:19) but whenever I chose to ignore or override it, there were disappointments and anguish.

In January 1997, I started the year with a lack of peace and an uneasy feeling in my spirit. I prayed and knew that it had something to do with the financial markets. Even though I was successful and achieved good investment results, yet the lack of peace was evident – it was like a red light warning that trouble was brewing ahead. As the months progressed, the warning intensified and I decided to obey and step out in faith by informing my superiors of my intention to realise our profits by liquidating the entire equity portfolio. This radical proposal was not backed up by any credible proof – it was just my “knowing”. On the contrary, all evidences seem to indicate that the stock market would continue to do well.

To my surprise, my superiors trusted my instinct and approved the proposal. My portfolio was reduced to a bare minimum and I had peace in my heart. On 1 July 1997, the Asian Financial Crisis started with no prior warning. Asian nations and economies were badly affected as foreign investors fled the region.  Stock markets and property markets crashed. Many companies went bust and people were retrenched in the following years.

I emerged unscathed from the financial turmoil, and even prospered as I held onto God’s Word and followed the leading of the Holy Spirit. I received a promotion, pay increase and good bonus – unheard of during those turbulent years.

To God be all the glory!

Today, the same God who leads and guides me can do the same for you. It is His will to do so. He longs to commune and guide you. Do you want to be led by the Holy Spirit in all areas of your life?

Remember Isaiah 48:17 says “Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way you should go”. God’s guidance will always be profitable for us. He always looks out for the well-being of His children.

Prayer and Meditation:

“I am a child of God and I can hear my Father’s voice. I am no longer confused or unsure about my life and future. I am a born-again believer and the Holy Spirit lives in me. The Holy Spirit can communicate the things of God to my spirit.

I agree that I can be led by the Holy Spirit as stated in Romans 8:14. Thank you Father for the ministry of the Holy Spirit – that He guides me and shows me things to come as stated in John 16:13.

I declare that I can know what is coming ahead – I will not panic or be caught unaware. I am confident and have full assurance that Holy Spirit will ALWAYS lead and guide me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
