ONE Miracle – One Great Commission

Matthew 28:16-20 NLT

16 Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him – but some of them doubted!  18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

If you have been a Christian for any length of time, you would likely know that what Jesus told His disciples in the above passage is what is known as The Great Commission.

I know this Bible passage very well and am able to memorize it. This week as I study it again, I ask the Holy Spirit to show me a new revelation, a deeper insight, lest this ONE Great Commission from my great Savior ceases to have great priority in my life.

The Holy Spirit whispers in my heart, “While you carry out The Great Commission with all the doing like ‘go’, ‘make disciples’, baptize’ and ‘teach’, you must always do it with the heart of The Great Commission.”

The heart of The Great Commission? It is God’s heart for the lost! What a great reminder this is for me.  Jesus came to seek and save the lost whom He loves dearly. Jesus came so that all who do not know Him can draw near to Him and receive His salvation. Jesus, in Luke 15, tells three parables of the lost sheep, lost coin and lost son. Jesus is depicting how much we must value the lost like He does. We must be on an immediate relentless search and enduring wait for the lost souls to return to their place in the Kingdom of God. How often do we do this? Always. For look around you and you will see there are always people who need God in their lives. Heart for the lost. This is the heart of The Great Commission that calls us to go, win souls, baptize them, and disciple them to mature in faith.

As I meditated further on The Great Commission, the Holy Spirit continues to speak to me, saying, “In as much as the heart of The Great Commission is God’s heart for the lost, it is also His heart for the saved, the Christ followers.”

God has entrusted all Christ followers with the responsibility to continue His mission of seeking and saving the lost. God longs for all Christ followers to fully live out our value in life. And He knows best. The only way we fully live out our value is to bring God’s Kingdom on earth, through evangelism and discipleship. Many of us think that our work, family life, studies and leisure are competing with The Great Commission for our time, energy and resources. And we simply have no time to carry out this mission from God. We cannot be more wrong. The positions and places we are in are in fact, the very fields God has given us to carry out The Great Commission. These are the fields for us to love and serve others so as to win them for Christ and disciple believers into maturity. Who we are, where we are, and what we have and do, these are God-given turfs for us to exercise God’s authority to make disciples of all the people we meet every day!

To all Christ followers, God is saying, “Go!  It is my heart’s desire for you to build My Kingdom. I have created you for this very purpose.” My friends, go!  God does not delight in our static state. God cannot move through us when we stay stationary. Go!  And see how He multiplies His Kingdom through you.

In Matthew 28:17, it says some of the disciples doubted. Jesus did not wait for the doubting disciples to clear their doubts and perfect their faith. He immediately gave The Great Commission in the next verse.  Jesus is giving this responsibility to all Christians, no matter what we think our faith level is at. You doubt you have what it takes to share the Gospel and disciple others?  God is telling you to do it anyway. You are not doing this alone. Jesus has given us the Holy Spirit to be with us, empowering us. Jesus promises in Matthew 28:20, “And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

I pray that from this point forth, you have a new heart, a new passion and a heightened urgency toward fulfilling The Great Commission. Let The Great Commission have great priority in our life, every day.

Let us quieten our heart and come before God to pray.

“Dear Lord, thank You for choosing me to be Your vessel to fulfill The Great Commission. I live my every day for this purpose, O God. I will go about my everyday life seeing people and engaging with them with Your love and heart. Use me mightily to enlarge Your Kingdom. Holy Spirit, guide me and strengthen me so I make very good use of every opportunity to evangelize and disciple. In Jesus’ Name, I pray.  Amen.”
