Total Dependence on God
Recently, I begin to realize even more how important dependence on God really is. I sometimes find myself struggling so hard to fight my own battles only to remember halfway that the battle belongs to the Lord. God wants us to rely on Him because we can only ever do so much on our own, but He is capable of all things.
Matthew 19:25-26 (NIV)
25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”
26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Every time we look upon Jesus’ salvation, we realize once again we cannot and will never be able to save ourselves with our works. But Jesus, who is pure and holy, has made us righteous by His death. As we surrender to Him and depend on Him, we can experience the joy of knowing His faithfulness and unfailing love towards us. It enables us to draw closer to Him and trust in Him as the storms of our lives get rough. It gives us the strength to cast away the doubts of life and it increases the quality of our faith so that we do not easily get shaken when faced with troubles. Relying on Jesus also allows us to experience the peace from knowing that all things are under the authority of God, and we can therefore cast our cares upon Him. I have experienced the power of Christ through my dependence on Him in times when I am completely helpless and the situations I encounter are beyond my control. I believe God is teaching me to submit to Him in all my ways, and that even when I think I am able to solve my problem, I must never leave Him out of my situation for He delights in me walking and sharing my life with Him.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Now, most of us know about the benefits of depending on God and that we should rely on Him, but how do we actually rely on Him?
We rely on Christ through prayer. I think that many of us, including me, underestimate the power of prayer because we often expect to see signs and wonders along after our prayer and become disappointed when we don’t. God works in many ways, He does show His supernatural and amazing powers through signs and wonders, but He also does ordinary things extraordinarily. It would astound you if you had a prayer journal to keep track of the prayers He has answered.
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
God says that we should present our requests to Him in ALL situations, not just those that we find most distressing or over the top.
Next, we rely on God through the Scripture. Heeding the counsel of the Scripture is a vital part of depending on God. Scripture holds the truth and the promises God has for us. Proclaiming His Word over our lives and refusing to listen to what the world says is important because God speaks to us through Scriptures and when we choose to rely on Him, we need to know what He is telling us. In addition, we can find wisdom in His Word to deal with the issues at hand.
Psalm 119:105 (NIV)
Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
When going through Scripture, it is crucial to know not just who God is and what He is able to do, but we also need to know that He is willing to do all that He is able to do for us. Furthermore, we need to know who we are in Christ, what we have and what we can do in Him. This will strengthen us spiritually and open our eyes to see that there is so much more to gain by relying on God and His guidance.
I encourage you to join me in this journey of total dependence on God so that we can all draw nearer to Him and know Him more than we already do.
“Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your guidance in my life that sometimes I fail to notice. Free me from the lies that I need to be independent and rely on myself always. I yearn to be closer to You and Your heart by depending on You completely. Thank You that You care for me and want me to surrender all my worries unto You, and I want to gladly do so. I am not perfect, but Your strength is made perfect in my weakness. Therefore let me boast in my weaknesses so that the power of Christ would rest in me. I want to be completely dependent on You Lord, thank You that I can do so. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.”
