Jehovah Shalom – Know God, Know Peace
John 14:27 (NIV)
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Today we are learning more about one of the Names of our God, and that is Jehovah Shalom – God our Peace.
Peace is more or less defined by a great measure of satisfaction or contentment in whatever situations you are faced with. And I strongly believe that our relationship with God plays an integral part in deciding if the Peace of Jehovah Shalom rests on us, for God abides in those that abide in Him.
The first time this Name of God was revealed is in chapter 6 of the Book of Judges, when God called upon the young Gideon to deliver Israel from the Midianites. When the Lord told Gideon He was going to use him to deliver Israel, Gideon set up an altar to God and called it Jehovah Shalom, The Lord is Peace.
During Gideon’s conversation with God, he asked God why all these bad things were happening to the Israelites when God said that He was for Israel. But God replied and posed a question back to him:” Am I not sending you?” And throughout the whole process of the defeating of the Midianites, God patiently reassured Gideon and made sure he was given answers whenever he asked.
I am pretty certain that there are times where we cry out to God and ask Him why all these things are happening to us, or to the people we know and love. Today, I want you to know that whatever concerns and worries you have, God hears them all and sees them all. He never forsakes us. But the thing that is of even greater importance, I believe, would be to strengthen your relationship with our Jehovah Shalom. Circumstances are there and sometimes are purposefully placed by God, to shape us and to mould us. Sometimes God chooses to remove them completely but other times they will linger around and stay put until you finally decide to face them head-on.
So how does God see us through in this case? Does the fact that He doesn’t take away the obstacle mean that He is not for us anymore? Remember that He wants to be our Source of peace and reassurance so that we can remain anchored and unshaken when we take on all our fears and concerns. That’s how our God loves.
Having peace is not the outward and physical satisfaction that life is going fine and dandy but it’s actually more of a spiritual and inward one. When you are graced with Peace from Jehovah Shalom, your outlook on life changes. Circumstances used to dictate your outlook on life, but now with God’s presence and peace, your outlook on life will dictate your reaction to circumstances. With the knowledge that God is all you need to get through and emerge victorious, you gain His strength and His peace to endure the harshest of trials and the wildest of storms so that you can come out of them trusting in the Lord even more than before!
Therefore, realign your vision and fix it upon Jehovah Shalom, so that you will be in a better position to receive His Peace. Remember that He is sending YOU out to be His lighthouse in this broken world. So shake the dust off, pick yourself up and shine on!
“Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You that I need not let my circumstances determine what my course of action will be. I pray that in all things I will only have one course of action, that is to listen to Your voice and to act in accordance to Your will. I pray that I will be able to grow deeper in my relationship with You and that You let Your peace rest on me. I thank You that You are my Jehovah Shalom and that with You, I need not fear nor worry because You are by my side walking this journey with me. Grant me with the Peace, O Lord, that I may act appropriately and be a testimony for Your Name. Thank You loving me this way and in Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.”
