These I Have Received
From time to time, I would receive fast food coupons. Those coupons allow me to enjoy certain discounts or even get free items when I make a purchase at the fast food outlet. But in order to enjoy such great deals, I need to be aware that I have them with me and use them. Otherwise, those coupons will just be useless pieces of paper. I remember an incident when I thought that I didn’t have those discount coupons with me. So I went ahead and made the purchase. Only to find out a few moments later, that I actually had them in my bag! I felt it was such a waste! Those coupons were given to me. But because I didn’t realize that I had them with me, I didn’t use them!
While this physical example may seem like it is insignificant, it is definitely not the case when it comes to spiritual things. Let us first look at the Word of God,
Ephesians 1:3 (NLT)
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.
Apostle Paul starts off by praising God. He acknowledges that praise and glory go to the Giver and not the gift itself. Let us learn from Apostle Paul to praise God every single day and in any situation. Every morning when I start my day by giving praise to God and shouting “Hallelujah!”, it helps me to set my day right. There are also many different ways for us to praise God! The definition of praise is to express gratitude, thanksgiving, adoration, to glorify, to bless, to be reverent, to honor and exalt. So in your own manner, praise God today and every single day!
We also see that God has blessed us. The key word is “blessed”. This word is in the past tense. It means that we have already been given the blessing! The blessing that Apostle Paul is referring to has already been given to us! It is not something that is to come. But things that we have already been given! God has blessed us. He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. Not one or two or a few, but it is EVERY spiritual blessing! God is a generous Giver who has blessed us so much more than whatever we can think or imagine.
What then are the spiritual blessings God has already given us? The answer can be found from Ephesians 1:4-14. We are the chosen people of God. We have received forgiveness. We have been redeemed. We have received wisdom and an inheritance. And we have also received spiritual security! These are the spiritual blessings that we have received.
The spiritual blessings from God can be likened to the coupons. We need to have the knowledge that we have received these spiritual blessings. But knowledge alone is not enough. We need to exercise faith and obedience as we live out the spiritual blessings! Satan always seeks to deceive us. He may cause us to think that we do not have enough or we have not received the spiritual blessings. Say NO to those thoughts and false beliefs! Start living the life and the spiritual blessings that God has already given you. You are a chosen generation of God who is called to live out the purpose He has for you. You have been forgiven of your sins, no longer are you bound by the past chains. The penalty of sin has been paid for. You have been redeemed by God when Jesus died on the Cross for you. You have been given the wisdom to evangelize and to disciple others. This wisdom comes from God and His Word. You are no longer living in lack, but have a life of inheritance according to the riches and glory of our Lord Jesus! You have been sealed by the power and authority of God! Be deceived no more! Live out the spiritual blessings that God has given you!
All these are made available when we are UNITED with Christ. Be united with Christ is to believe in Him. It is to flow with Him and be in tandem with Him. When we are united with Christ, we follow whatever He commands us to do. He commands us to love God and love people. To love God is to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. To love people is to let them experience God’s love through us, sharing with them the Good News, to disciple them with the Word.
Let us pray.
Dear Heavenly Father, all praise and glory to You! Hallelujah! Thank You for Your mighty power over my life. Thank You for every spiritual blessing that You have given me. I thank You for your truth that sheds light into my life that I have already received every spiritual blessing. I live every day according to Your will and I live out the spiritual blessings you have given me. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN!
