Ephesians 4:1-6 NKJV

1 Therefore, I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,
being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

There is nothing the devil fears more than Christians who are united. This means that his number one tactic is to bring disunity in the Church. If he can succeed, then the Church is crippled.

Jesus speaks about the power of unity and agreement in Matthew 18:19 NKJV, “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.” Jesus says what He means and He does what He says. We can receive anything when we are united in agreement about it in prayer.

The Bible says that one can put a thousand to flight, but two could put ten thousand to flight. Together, we can accomplish more than when we work alone.

God’s people are a diverse group. We come from varied backgrounds, nationalities, economic and educational levels. We have different personalities, preferences and needs. How can such a diverse group have unity? By God’s Spirit that binds us together in the bond of peace. This refers to the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in us. God dwelling in us through the Holy Spirit enables us to live in unity with one another. It is an attitude and lifestyle of yielding to the Holy Spirit that enables us to be humble, gentle, patient and bearing one another in love, thereby preserving the unity in the Church. Conversely, a church community which lacks this bond of peace is one that has lost touch with the Holy Spirit. Even though they may be armed with a rich knowledge of God’s Word, they have no interest in seeking peace with others as they have thrown aside the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit weaves us together into one Body of people through the hope that we share in God’s final victory and the joy of being eternally in His presence. Our unity is rooted in the fact that we all trust in the same Lord and Master, and have been baptized into a new citizenship in His Kingdom. The unity we share with one another is of a family, as God is the Father who is over all, through all and in all (Ephesians 4:6). The Body of Christ is not a mere organization but a family with God as our Father and us as His beloved children, and brothers and sisters to one another.

Unity in the Church is vital to the success of the mission God has called us to. We must stand firm in unity to advance the work of the Gospel. We advance this work by maintaining and forging Godly unity in the Body of Christ, and we set the work back when we cause division.

Have you ever listened to an orchestra warming up before a performance? Each member is practicing on his own instrument with no consideration for others. During this time, what they produce is a dreadful noise and not beautiful music. But when the conductor lifts the baton, the individual practice stops and all eyes are on him. Then at the gentle wave of the baton, the orchestra begins to play heavenly music. What makes the difference? The orchestra is now in one accord. No one is on his own doing his own thing. And when all do their part according to the direction of the conductor, the music is lovely. On their own, the music does not amount to much at all, but together they sound breathtaking. As disciples of Christ and members of His Body, you and I too, need to harmonize together and be united. Jesus says that when we do so, the world would come to believe in Him (John 17:21).

You and I must walk in a manner worthy of the calling from our God. It is time you and I fix our eyes on Christ Jesus always, follow the wave of His baton, so that together, we bring the beautiful melody of His amazing grace to the people around us that they may believe in Jesus and be saved.

Join me in this prayer.

“Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You that Jesus has come to bring all people to be united with You here on earth and in heaven for eternity. I heed Your call to be in one accord with all believers to advance Your Kingdom. Teach us all who are followers of Christ and members of His Body, to lay aside differences amongst us and be in one heart, always yielding to the voice and work of the Holy Spirit so that we are one united Body of Christ proclaiming the Gospel to the ends of the earth. I surrender my life to You as Your faithful servant, pursuing and living out Your calling on my life. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”
