What Is Your Christmas Gift To Jesus?
Christmas is a time when we practice the giving of gifts. However, have you ever wondered why it is a time of giving gifts?
Actually, it all started some 2,000 years ago when the One who created the human race decided to give us a very special gift. God, who is the One who created us, gave us His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, so that we may experience life in the way it was meant to be when He first created us.
God first created us to enjoy this beautiful world that He has created. But because we decided to do our own thing and ignore God, we have disconnected ourselves from Him and His blessings. God’s Son, Jesus Christ, came to earth as a human being at Christmas in order to bring us back to God. God gave us such a thoughtful gift of His Son at Christmas and this is why we celebrate Christmas also with the giving of gifts.
Before I knew Jesus, I liked the idea of giving gifts during Christmas period because it was fun to give and receive gifts. However, ever since I became a Christian and understood what God did, I have become more conscious of what the giving of gifts is all about. After some years of giving and receiving Christmas gifts, it suddenly occurred to me that I had been giving gifts to everybody except Jesus Christ, whom the celebration was all about.
It is odd that many of us celebrate Christmas without Jesus. It is as if we attended a birthday party and gave gifts to all the guests, except the birthday boy. Upon this realization, I decided to celebrate Christmas differently.
When our family gathers for Christmas celebration, instead of just feasting, chatting and exchanging gifts, I encourage my family members to thank God for something they are thankful for in the year that has passed. After everybody shares their thanksgiving items, we have a time of prayer to thank God for all that He has done for us. Through our time of thanksgiving, I know God is pleased and that our thanksgiving makes His birthday celebration special. I also practice this with the Christians whom I fellowship with in church and in my office.
Besides this, I have also told Jesus that I would like to give Him a personal birthday present every Christmas. I asked Jesus to bring to me someone who does not know Him and when He brings that person or persons to me, I will, with God’s help, introduce them to Jesus Christ. I’ve done this for the last 20 years and God never failed to bring people to me to share the Gospel with in the month of December. And I would regard my act of witnessing to these people as my personal gift to Jesus as His birthday present! By witnessing to these people around me, I know Jesus is pleased because He loves everyone and would like to be reconnected to them so that He can bless them.
What about you? What gift are you giving Jesus this Christmas?
If you do not know Jesus Christ and wonder what Christmas is all about, I encourage you to talk to God in your heart. Tell God that you want to get to know Him, and get to know Christians to help you know more about Jesus. I would like to encourage you to attend the church services at River and begin your journey to understand more about how much God loves you and how He has given you His special gift of His Son, Jesus Christ.
For all who are Christians, I would like to encourage you to re-examine your annual Christmas celebration practices and choose to make them personally special for Jesus. After all, Christmas is all about Jesus!
Let us pray.
“Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You that because You gave us Your only Son, Jesus, I can celebrate Christmas. Thank You for Your great and unending love for me. This Christmas season, as the world celebrates and exchanges gifts, I rededicate my life to You, O God. Yes, every part of my life, I give to You for Your use. I make a renewed commitment to keep sharing this gift of Your love and salvation to the people around me. Lead and guide me every day to share with someone the real meaning of Christmas. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”
