All Are Children Of God
26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,
27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Sometime back, I had the delightful opportunity of witnessing to a 10-year old girl who was born in China and presently staying in Singapore. Her parents enrolled her into a local primary school and she has been trying very hard to learn the English language in order to cope with her studies. She has also been learning to adapt to the school culture and the local culture so that she can socialize with her friends.
After I shared with her about God’s love and His plan for salvation, she immediately said that she would want to accept Jesus as her personal Lord and Saviour. After saying the Sinners’ Prayer, she kept thanking me for taking the time to explain to her about the love of God. After a while, I asked her if she had any questions that she would like to ask about Jesus. She looked troubled and then blurted out the question, “Does Jesus love girls as much as He loves boys?” When she asked that question, I was almost moved to tears as coming from her country of origin, she was very aware that boys were treasured much more than girls.
In many cultures, sons are deemed to be more desirable than daughters for religious or economic reasons. Some couples may even seek to terminate pregnancies when they find out their child is a female. According to a foreign newspaper dated 20/03/2013, in one particular country, an estimated 336 million abortions have been performed over the past four decades as part of its enforced family planning policy. Calculations by the government show that about 13 million babies are aborted in the country annually – or approximately, 1,500 every hour. Under the government’s oppressive policy, most couples are allowed only one child in most cases and the preference for male children has led to the overwhelming number of abortion of female babies.
From all the stories that the young girl has heard and read about in her country of origin, she is fully aware of the inferiority of being a female even at such a tender age of 10. It is interesting how at her first opportunity to ask a question about God, the first thing she really wanted to know was, “Does God love girls as much as He loves boys?”
I told her that God loves every one of us and that He is the One who made us male and female, and He loves all of us so much that He sacrificed Himself to die for our sins so that all of us, regardless of our gender, can be saved and can experience living life with God forever.
After listening to my answer to her query, she broke out in a joyful and broad smile. I could sense that she felt so assured and relieved that she had a Father in Heaven who loves her as much as He loves all the boys in the world!
As we reflect upon her innocent child-like question, let us be reminded that since God loves and accepts us regardless of our gender, we should love and value each other not only in our homes but also in our work places and in church. We should not conform to the values of this world that discriminate certain genders in certain areas of society. Our acceptance and living out of the value God gives to each one of us, regardless of gender, will help unite us as a family of God without discrimination or rejection of any form.
We love and value one another, regardless of gender, because God first loves all of us and with that truth, we can be united in our worship and service for the Lord our God. We know for a fact that He loves and can use any one of us for His service, whether male or female, as long as we love Him with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. God also expects us to love everybody as much as we love ourselves and not show preferences for any gender, or for anything at all.
Let us pray.
“Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your love. It is because of Your love that I am saved and able to experience Your grace every moment of my life. It is out of Your love for the world that You have given us Your precious Son, Jesus. Help me to always remember this truth that every person on this earth is created by Your loving Hands and loved by You. As I see differences in other people, teach me to fix my eyes on the truth that we all belong to the same Lord and Savior. Use me to love the people around me with Your love, leading them to know You as their Father. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”
