Listen To Your Heart
“Listen to your heart”. I’ve heard this phrase countless times from people around me. This phrase has been used so conveniently in almost every situation. When it comes to a problematic issue or when faced with a dilemma, my friends would often say, “just listen to your heart.”
As a biology student, my understanding of the heart is that it is a strong muscle vital to a person’s survival. The heart is required to pump blood to the whole body, so that every part of the body can function and the person can be kept alive. If the heart stops for a considerable amount of time, a person is considered dead. But this physical heart can’t talk! Since it can’t talk, then how can we listen to it?
However, the heart that I’m referring to today is the spiritual heart. This spiritual heart is also referred to as the inner man or the spirit man within us. The Holy Spirit communicates to us through the inner man to give us guidance.
Jesus in John 16:13 says, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”
Upon reading this verse, I then understand how I can listen to my heart in any and every situation! This is because the heart that I’m listening to is guided by the Holy Spirit! Jesus says in John 14:26 that the Holy Spirit is our Advocate, Teacher, Comforter and Counsellor. We can listen to and heed the leading of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives. And we can truly say to ourselves and to our friends, “listen to your heart”.
Similar to the physical heart, the spiritual heart aka the inner man is vital to our survival. The spiritual heart is an essential aspect in our spiritual life and our eternal life that we have with God. It is only with our spiritual heart that we can heed the guidance from the Holy Spirit who desires us to live a life that is in accordance to the plans and purposes that God has for us. Otherwise we’ll just be going through life aimlessly or even pursuing things that wouldn’t mean much when we pass on.
Now we know the importance of listening to and being led by the Holy Spirit, how can we do so?
Firstly, it’s through the renewal of our mind by the Word of God. Apostle Paul teaches us in Romans 12:2, “and do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
In order to be led by the Holy Spirit, the renewal of our mind on a daily basis is the key! The Bible is the manual for us to lead a purposeful and meaningful life. My Pastor, Dr Stephen Tan once said, BIBLE can be said to mean Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. Only when we fill ourselves with the Word of God, then our spirit can be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
The next important aspect on being led by the Holy Spirit is to spend time with God. Jesus says in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” I once did a study on the characteristics of sheep. Sheep need to spend enough time with the shepherd in order to be able to recognize His voice. Only then the sheep will be able to quickly follow the shepherd’s instructions to be fed or to be brought back to the stable for rest. Likewise, if we desire to be able to listen to the Holy Spirit, we need to spend time worshipping, fellowshipping and communicating with God.
Do you desire a life filled with purpose, meaning, blessing, abundance, favour, wisdom and protection? If so, you need to listen to your spiritual heart that receives guidance from the Holy Spirit. Also, share with others about Jesus and the importance of listening to the Holy Spirit. Let them have this opportunity to be able to lead a blessed and successful life.
Come, let’s pray.
“Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for blessing me with the Holy Spirit who is the heart of my spiritual life. I surrender myself to You. I commit to listen to and obey the leading of the Holy Spirit. I continually renew my mind with Your Word. I thank You, that with the help of the Holy Spirit, I can live a life of blessings and abundance. I commit to speak about Jesus and encourage others to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in every step of their lives. In Jesus Name I pray, AMEN!”
