A New Life Has Begun
2 Corinthians 5:17 & 18 (NLT)
17 …Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person.
The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
18 And all of this is a gift from God…
You and I have a gift from God! The Bible tells us anyone who believes in Christ has become a new person. Yes, anyone! Regardless of gender, age, background and social status. This is great news!
The moment anyone receives Jesus as his Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live on the inside of him. His previous moral and spiritual condition has passed away, and the Holy Spirit guides and empowers him to live a fresh and new life.
Friends, receive this beautiful truth and promise into your very core. With Jesus in your life, you have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of you, and you receive and experience a change from the inside out. How important this is! An apple can look red and luscious on the outside, but if its core is rotten, this apple is not fit to be eaten. A river may have clear water flowing in it but if the source from which the water springs forth is contaminated, no living creatures can live in the seemingly beautiful river.
The Holy Spirit renews and transforms us from the inside out, so that all that flow out of us become life-giving. O how I love the Holy Spirit!
This gift of the Holy Spirit Who dwells in us is the Source of our new life. The Word of God tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7 (HCSB), “For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.”
Let us be honest, fear is a part of our natural temperament for most of us. We have a fear of not being able to succeed, of other people’s opinions of us, of the uncertainty of our future. Fear often causes us to run away from responsibilities.
While God puts a new spiritual life within us, our natural temperament does not change in an instant. But God is by the Holy Spirit, working in our lives so that we need not live a life controlled by fear like we used to. For “God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness”. Instead, the Holy Spirit dwells in us to give us that very power to deal with and overcome our fear, so that we operate from faith. This is key for our faith is the foundation of us walking in God’s will and purpose for us.
2 Timothy 1:7 tells us the Holy Spirit God has given us is “of power, love, and sound judgment.” When obstacles come our way and hurdles block our progress, the Holy Spirit gives us the power to surmount them. While fear and anxiety may still be there, as believers of Christ, we have at the same time the divine power to endure, to hold out and to overcome.
Sometimes, we know what the right thing is to do but simply fail to find the will or energy to do so. The Holy Spirit within us is the Source of power that gives us a little nudge and that motivation to rise above our feelings to do the things of God. Yes, God has given you power through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is within you. And He is the Spirit of Power.
The Holy Spirit is a Spirit of love. Are there people in your life whom you find difficult to love? Are there occasions when you find loving someone inconvenient or even draining? The Holy Spirit leads and directs us to the love of God that is always outward-looking. When we find it hard to love, the Spirit living in us gives us the tenderness and love to lend that listening ear, give an encouraging word or forgive that person. The Holy Spirit draws us to love God and love people more.
And finally, God promises in His Word that the Holy Spirit in us is one of “sound judgment”. We read also in other translations of the Bible that this is described as “self-discipline”, “self-control”, “sound mind” and “calm and well-balanced mind”. I want all of these traits! To me, they all sum up as “wisdom”.
Before I had Jesus in my life, I used to be confused whenever I had to make a decision. I did not know if I should heed my emotions, my intellect, my past experiences or other people’s opinions. Thank God for the Holy Spirit Who dwells in me now. He gives me a sound mind and wisdom to discern among the various options and make a decision that aligns with God’s Word. Indeed, thank God for the Holy Spirit, Who is the Spirit of sound judgment and wisdom. He is clearly the Source I want to draw from in my decision-making and in daily affairs of life.
My friends, embrace the promise of a new life through the Holy Spirit. He dwells in every believer of Christ. Yes, you have the Holy Spirit within you. He gives you power, love and sound judgment. You are divinely equipped and empowered by the Holy Spirit to lead the successful life God has planned for you. Stop dwelling on your weaknesses and circumstances. Start dwelling on the indwelling Holy Spirit. He has promised never to leave you or forsake you.
Let us say this prayer together.
“Holy Spirit, I love You. Thank You for living inside of me. Thank You that with You, I am renewed and empowered daily. I know that because You dwell in me, I have power, love and wisdom to daily step into the new life my Heavenly Father has prepared for me. Holy Spirit, I ask You to fill me afresh and flow in me and through me. I thank You that as I hear Your voice and follow Your leading each day, I have new life flowing in me and out of me. I commit to be Your vessel giving and sharing the new life I have in You with the people around me. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”
