Come, See For Yourself!

Listen to Audio Here.

I recently made a trip with my family to Japan. As it was our first visit to Japan, many things were new and interesting to us. At one of the markets, my mother spotted a basket of sea-urchin-looking nut. Her immediate response was: “Hey, come and see!” Not long after, my whole family as well as other curious tourists crowded around the store selling the sea-urchin-looking nut. Throughout the trip, this was merely one of the many occasions in which the phrase, “come and see!” drew the attention of the crowd.

As I was reading the book of John, this phrase, “Come, see for yourself” was very prominent.

John 1:39 (MSG)
… “Come along and see for yourself.” They came, saw where He was living, and ended up staying with Him for the day…

John 1:45-46 (MSG)
45-46 Philip went and found Nathanael and told him, “We’ve found the One Moses wrote of in the Law, the One preached by the prophets. It’s Jesus, Joseph’s son, the one from Nazareth!” Nathanael said, “Nazareth? You’ve got to be kidding.” But Philip said, “Come, see for yourself.”

The joy of seeing and knowing the Messiah, Jesus, was so great. The followers of Jesus couldn’t contain their excitement. They went to the people they knew, calling them to come and see Jesus. In John 1:39, “they” refers to the disciples of John the Baptist, one of whom is Andrew. After hearing the witnessing by John the Baptist, he believed in Jesus and followed Him. In John 1:41-42, Andrew brought his brother to Jesus. Similar to Andrew, Philip brought his friend Nathanael to Jesus. In both situations, Andrew and Philip merely called their family and friend to come and see Jesus. They left the rest up to Jesus. By the end of John 1:50, we learn that Peter and Nathanael also became followers of Jesus.

As disciples of Jesus, we hold the very important and precious truth. The truth is that Jesus is the Messiah, the One who saves. He gives life to those who believe in Him. This truth is not meant to be kept as a secret. It ought to be shared with others around us with joy, excitement, boldness and loudness. We are called to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus will take care of the rest when we obey Him.

Let us look at another passage which also shares the same idea of “come and see for yourself’.

John 4:28-30, 39-41(MSG)
28-30 Back in the village she told the people, “Come see a man who knew all about the things I did, who knows me inside and out. Do you think this could be the Messiah?” And they went out to see for themselves.
39-41 Many of the Samaritans from that village committed themselves to him because of the woman’s witness: “He knew all about the things I did. He knows me inside and out!” They asked Him to stay on, so Jesus stayed two days. A lot more people entrusted their lives to Him when they heard what He had to say.

Jesus spoke about the things He knew about the Samaritan woman even before she told Him anything. After this, the woman went back to her village and shared boldly with everyone what she had encountered. Although she didn’t know a lot about Jesus, she simply called the people in her village to come and see for themselves. Many people in the village believed in Jesus after hearing the woman witnessing about Him. But “a lot more people” commited their life to Jesus after hearing what Jesus said. Because of this Samaritan woman’s witnessing, the people had the opportunity to hear the words of Jesus personally and believed in Him.

You and I are called to be like this Samaritan woman. Let us go around witnessing for Jesus. Share with others how you came to know Jesus. Invite them to our Church, River, to come and see for themselves. Let them have this opportunity to hear the Word of God personally. Easter is around the corner, share with them about Jesus’ death on the Cross and His resurrection. Invite them to our weekly Sunday church service and our Amazing Easter! Service. Let us be UNITED to share the Good News boldly with everyone, so that many will believe and commit their lives to Jesus.

If you are not yet a believer of Jesus, I invite you to come and see for yourself! Come and join us for our Sunday service and our Amazing Easter service! You’ve got to experience it for yourself!

Let us pray.

“Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your precious Word. I commit to be like Andrew, Philip and the Samaritan woman who go around witnessing and bringing people to You. I thank You that as I make the invitation and do the sharing, You will take care of the rest. Thank You, Father! In Jesus’ most mighty Name I pray, AMEN!”
