The Beautiful Everlasting Alliance
Psalm 54:4 AMP
Behold, God is my Helper and Ally; the Lord is my Upholder…
During my undergraduate days, I studied political affairs of Europe. I was brought through how countries would form alliances with other nations. Countries drew agreements and signed treaties among themselves as they knew that by coming together, they were in a better position to exert influence. Though there exist differences among them, the various nations formed alliances and unions as they shared a common specific purpose and understood that by being united, they had a greater competitive edge to advance their purpose.
Well, I am not a great European nation in pursuit of political power or economic might. But I have the greatest and most powerful Ally on my side in my life. It is not because I went scouring for Him but because He has first established the beautiful alliance with me. I did not have to draw up complex agreements for us to endorse. My Ally has sealed the beautiful alliance with His precious Blood. All I had to do was to have faith, believe in my heart that He has died for me on the Cross out of love, and confess with my mouth that Jesus is my Lord and Savior.
Yes, Jesus Christ is my Strong, Mighty and Loving Ally! When He gave His life on the Cross, rose to life on the third day, He was establishing for the whole world a Beautiful Alliance, an Everlasting Covenant, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). Jesus has come so that all the world can have life, abundant life, life to the fullest (John 10:10).
Jesus has come so that all His people can be united with our Heavenly Father. It is our Lord Jesus Who is out pursuing and seeking the lost to be united with Him. Jesus loves every person so much that He wants every one to enter into this union with Him so that we can all have the eternal and abundant life He has come to give.
God has established the Beautiful Alliance not because He needs the help of people to advance His purpose, but because He knows we need Him to discover and fulfill our purpose in life. It is only when we are united with God in this union and have a relationship with Him, that we are able to rely on Him and put our hope in Him.
The psalmist in Psalm 54 begins from a place of humility acknowledging his state of need and proclaiming God’s strength and power. The psalmist may be exhausted, under siege by enemies and feels indignant about evil people prospering. But he puts his hope in his God and cries out, “Behold, God is my Helper and Ally; the Lord is my Upholder…” (Psalm 54:4).
I know I can learn from this. Often when I am confronted by needs and challenges, I respond from a position of insecurity in myself instead of security in and dependence on God. Instead of seeking God, my Ally, I grumble, complain and want to give up, exhausted by failed attempts at getting things right. It is so easy to be blinded by ugliness around us and forget about our God Who makes things beautiful. It is so easy to be tripped by obstacles and forget to look to God Who upholds us.
God is our Ally. God helps us, upholds us and defends us. Whatever you may be going through now, God is able to breathe fresh life into dry bones and He is able to rebuild what you think has been destroyed.
God is our Ally. What we need to do to be always partnering with Him in this Beautiful Alliance is to always point ourselves in His direction, like what the psalmist does in Psalm 54. Walk alongside God, depend on Him and be secure in Him.
God is our Ally. We share a common purpose – His purpose. God wants us to be united with Him to advance His purpose of drawing all men to His Kingdom. You and I have been given the privilege and responsibility to reach out to the world to invite them into this Beautiful Everlasting Alliance with our God.
Deuteronomy 7:9 (NIV)
Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
Let us pray together.
“Dear God, I declare You are my Helper, my Ally, my Upholder. I thank You for Your covenant of love that lasts up to a thousand generations. Thank You for Your everlasting love, O Father. Indeed with You, I am in an alliance that can influence and conquer the world. Yes, Lord, I am with You, I live for You, to advance Your purpose to bring Your Gospel to the ends of the world, so that all knees bow down at the Name of Jesus and all lips confess Jesus is the Savior and Lord of the world. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”
