A Planted Tree

Listen To Audio Here.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV)
7 ”But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.
8 They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.

We see here in Jeremiah 17 how the author describes people who place their trust in the Lord, and what an apt description at that. The verses relate to this kind of people and liken them to trees which have been planted by the riverbank. You see, God has called each and every one of us to be trees that are planted beside the rivers of living waters, He did not call us into more worries and concerns but He called us to take away all that. God wants to be our Hope, our Confidence, our Peace, so that we can in turn, lead others into the knowledge and reconciliation of the Savior of the world. The problem lies here: many a time, we act based on what we see and not what we believe in, we act based on how everyone else is acting and we end up in a situation where the voice of God is drowned out by every other thing.

There are a few characteristics that I feel are important to know when we want to be people who are blessed by God, not just in the physical sense but in the spiritual sense as well. So firstly, why does the author refer to those who trust and hope in the Lord as trees? Well for one, they are able to stay perfectly still. God wants us to be able to learn the skill of being still before Him. You could be facing so much right now that you may very well be overwhelmed by the whole spectrum of problems in your life but here’s the thing: amidst all that chaos and despair, the Prince of Peace is right there beside you, not just for a day or a week, but for the rest of your life, till the end of the age. And it isn’t my words that say so, it’s His! Learn to be still when you come before God, He can speak as loud as a roaring lion at times, but there are also times He speaks as soft and subtle as a whisper in the wind, so no matter what, quieten your heart and spirit and instead of telling and telling for a change, why not spend more time listening out for that Voice.

Another thing God wants us to do is to dig deep and anchor ourselves firmly and strongly onto Him and His Word. Roots penetrate deep, and when they find a source of water, they grow even deeper and towards the source. In the same way, God doesn’t want us to be people who just take His Word at face value and be overly quick in throwing in the towel when the time comes for us to face trials and tribulations. God wants us to delve deep into the waters, the deeper the better, because with greater knowledge of His Word comes a greater assurance and a natural confidence of His providence and His faithfulness. Lastly of course, God wants us to be people who are open to His direction and counsel in all circumstances. The verses say that the leaves of these trees will always remain green, and that’s the part where we differ from the other trees out there. Logically speaking, when a tree knows it is going to go through a harsher environment or climate, it loses its leaves and lives off the food it has already stored. But that is how the world thinks, that we get by the troubles of life by relying on whatever that we’ve got, and I’m sure a lot of us have ever experienced it before. Today, I want to encourage you to be the tree that God wants you to be, trust in Him, rely on Him, hope in Him and put your confidence in Him, and I assure you that blessings will be well on their way.

Let’s pray.

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the plans and the future that You have for me, I thank You that those who trust in You and put their confidence in You are a blessed people indeed. Father, if there are any areas of my life in which I have not trusted You wholly in, I surrender them all unto You today. I pray that I will be like a tree that is planted beside the riverbank and I will be a temple of Yours where rivers of living waters flow forth from me into the lives of those around me. Open up my heart, soul and mind to receive and to hear from You even as I walk out the rest of my journey with You, Lord. Thank You for always being there for me, in my joy and in my pain. I pray all these In Jesus’ Most Mighty Name, Amen.
