Get Real With This, Part I
Ephesians 6:12, 13 & 18 NKJV/NASB
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints…
As follower of Christ, we sometimes neglect that we are engaged in a spiritual battle with the spiritual forces of evil, as the Apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12. And these forces we are dealing with are cunning, venomous, malicious and intelligent forces which are at the back of the evils, wrongs, injustice and sins that we see and encounter.
We must develop a consciousness and awareness of these spiritual forces we are up against. Otherwise, we are being carnal. If we are carnal, our warfare is carnal, and we will not be used by God as His warriors in the spiritual battle. When we are carnal as believers, our weapons are carnal. We engage men on their own level and answer back their challenge with that which they challenge us. For instance, if others challenge us with reason, we respond to them with reason; if they come at us with fierce temper, we react in the heat of our temper too; if someone comes against us with criticism, we give him back what he gives us, maybe even with greater intensity. That is carnal warfare, using carnal weapons.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, it is time we cease to be carnal and realize that we are engaged in a real spiritual battle against some formidable forces. Then we will know to wield spiritual weapons and tools of the Lord. When we face opposition, pressure, difficulties and adversity, we must look beyond the physical and know that what we are up against are the evil forces behind and beneath them. When people speak against us and circumstances threaten us, we are dealing in the spiritual realm with spiritual forces and not merely with carnal and physical ones. With this knowledge and awareness, we cease to fight after the flesh; we cease to fight merely man; we cease to battle with the flesh in the flesh; our warfare is in another realm altogether.
In this spiritual battle where we are wrestling not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers, the natural man’s resources are powerless. Only spiritual weapons, spiritual resources and tools are effective. And praise God, we are equipped with a spiritual armor, the armor of God.
After the Apostle Paul has shown us each part of the full armor of God and exhorts us to take it up so as to withstand and stand firm, he goes on to teach us in Ephesians 6:18, “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit…”
The armor of God is rendered powerless and useless if we do not at the same time, be in the position of prayer at all times.
I think one of the focal points of the enemy is to weaken and destroy the prayer life of the believers. If he can destroy that by any means, he has almost gained the day, defeated the believers and disrupted the plans and will of God.
In warfare in the physical, one common tactic is to destroy or confuse the enemy’s communication with their commander. With this, the army cannot receive directives from the authority and cannot follow and execute the commander’s strategy. This definitely weakens the stakes of victory.
Without communication with the commander-in-chief, we are left to our own devices. And over a period of time, we feel like we are in the battle all by ourselves with no higher authority with whom we can consult, and request help, support and counsel from. Such an army is an easy prey to the enemy. Such an army is doomed for failure and defeat.
But God has called His children to be victorious! So brothers and sisters in Christ, decide today you want to walk in His victory and commit to be always in the position of prayer in this spiritual battle.
Join me in this prayer.
“Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for each piece of the spiritual armor You have equipped us with to stand firm in this evil day. Thank You for teaching me today that being in the position of prayer is positioning myself to be victorious against the evil forces of this age. Lord, help me to be dedicated and devoted in my prayer life as I commit to take steps to grow in this area. Let my eyes, my ears and my heart be so in tune with what You desire for me that I cannot help but do Your will every moment of my life. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”
