Ephesians 3:16-19 NLT/NCV
16 I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through His Spirit.
17 Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.
18 And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love – how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is.
19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
God loves every person. He loves you and me. This is the vital truth in our Christian faith and the essence of the Christian life is to respond to God’s love in love.
It is this simple. Or maybe it is not quite that simple. Actually I think many people struggle with the notion of God’s love. It may not be easy to comprehend or to lay hold of the reality of God’s love. So many of us have experienced the pain of rejection, abandonment or betrayal in our life at some point. It may have been a spouse leaving you, a close friend deceiving you or a parent abusing you. Sometimes, it becomes difficult to understand how a God I cannot see could love me when all these people who are supposed to love me have terribly let me down. Where was God’s love when these things happened to me?
The Enemy loves it when we have such thoughts and doubts and he will do all he can to plant even more lies to make us believe that God does not really love us and therefore cannot be trusted. Such a ploy from the devil always gets us spiraling down in our faith and strength because without fully embracing God’s love in our life, we are powerless in the face of any life situation.
The apostle Paul knows the importance of this and prays that the Holy Spirit strengthens our inner man that we may be awakened to the reality of God’s love, and trust in Him. Then, our heart becomes the dwelling place of Christ where Christ’s heart beats inside of us, directing us to think, speak, and live as Christ would. As a result, our lives are increasingly rooted, grounded and established in the love of Christ, and our eyes and hearts are open to more deeply understand and experience the breadth, the length, the height and the depth of Christ’s love.
This is how wide the love of Christ is – it covers all of humanity, it is wide enough to be everywhere, there is no place you can be where God’s love is not there.
How long is the love of Christ? It is immeasurable and everlasting. God’s love began before the foundation of the earth and extends right up to eternity.
See how high the love of Christ is – it reaches up the His Throne in the Heavens. Christ’s love takes us to have an intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father and grows us to be more and more like Christ.
And this is how deep the love of Christ is – it cleanses and forgives the hidden, innermost trespasses and sins of ours. God’s love reaches down to love even the greatest of sinners like you and me.
Until we begin to continually grasp and open up to the full dimension of God’s love, we are going to find it hard to fully trust in Him, and we will not surrender every area of our lives to Him thinking that there are areas His love cannot penetrate into. Yet, whatever we withhold from God, we are in effect withholding that aspect of our lives from access to the power of God.
Ephesians 3:19 tells us that when we experience the love of Christ, we will be made complete with the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Are you trying to change an aspect of your lifestyle in order to be more healthy, but have been facing difficulties? Are you facing challenges in working to achieve certain breakthroughs in your life? Quit trying to muster enough willpower. Begin to open your heart in a surrendered way to the love of Christ. Open your Bible to know God more. Worship and pray with all your heart to draw close to God and experience the love of Christ.
As you do so, you are being made whole with the fullness of life and power that comes from our God.
Let us pray.
“Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the indwelling Holy Spirit Who empowers me to see Your love that my physical eyes cannot and understand Your immeasurable love in a way that my human mind cannot. Reveal to me more and more the greatness of Your love as I read and meditate on Your Word, worship You and pray each day. As I increasingly know and experience this love of Christ, transform me into His likeness that I may have the power to overcome every ounce of ungodly attitude and habits and live according to Your righteousness. I surrender my life to Your ways and Your will, availing myself every moment to share Your great love with every person I meet every day. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”
