I grew up in a well-to-do family and my younger brother was the favourite son in the family. On the day he passed his driving test, my father bought him a brand new sports car. He was obviously excited with it and couldn’t wait to test drive the car. After owning the car, my brother socialised a lot and often returned home very late at night. One day, in the very early hours of the morning, at around 2am, my mother woke up and realising that my brother was still not home yet, she felt an urgency to pray for his safety.
Meanwhile, my brother was fetching his girlfriend home and at 2am, he was on his way home and as he was very, very tired, he dozed off while driving his sports car at more than 160km per hour. He was alone when he was driving along the expressway and the car went off the road and the car was going so fast that it hit one tree, then moved on to hit another tree and it is only the third tree that the car hit on that finally managed to stop the car. Due to the impact, the car battery flew out of the car and the whole car was smashed beyond repair. My brother woke up from the impact, walked out of the car and was totally unharmed. He then walked to the side of the road and hailed a taxi. The driver of the taxi saw the wreckage of the car and asked my brother, “Are you a man or a ghost?”
I believe that God woke my mother up at 2am and prompted her to pray for my brother and that had not only saved my brother’s life, my brother was miraculously completely unharmed in that whole episode.
Have you ever been suddenly prompted by the Holy Spirit to pray for someone? It is important not to ignore that prompting.
“….The Holy Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”
Were there days in your life in which you felt that someone must have been praying for you as you felt His presence which seemed to have come from beyond yourself? Or you were suddenly filled with the awareness of the goodness of God? Some days, you might have felt you were miraculously delivered from some imminent danger to your life or that you felt you were so filled with God’s love that you had the grace to forgive someone easily for some harm that they had done to you.
Have you wondered how much of you and your life is being shaped by the prayers of others?
The apostle Paul affirmed the importance of intercessory prayers in his writings to the Ephesians:
14 For this reason I kneel before the Father,
15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.
16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,
18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,
19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,
21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

“Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for Christians who have taken time to intercede for me. Though I may not be aware, I know I have benefitted much from their prayers for me. Thank You most of all, dear Jesus, for living forever as my High Priest and for always interceding for me. Through Your intercession, I enjoy protection and I am able to live the abundant life that You seek to give me while I am still on earth. Thank You that through Your intercession, I am then able to fulfil Your purpose for my life and receive joy and peace that are from You and You alone. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
