Pursuit of Holiness
Recently God taught me something extremely crucial in the area of evangelism. I guess I knew about the matter in my head, but my heart had not yet comprehended the weight of what it was.
“Your personal testimony for God is greater than all the Scripture you only memorize.”
This statement was sort of a wake-up call for me because I had been seeking more of God’s Word and building up my knowledge of His Word but I was missing something very key in my study of His Word, and that is, application. We can read as much Scripture as we can, but if it does not produce change within us, then we have missed the point. I am not speaking of only external behavioral changes, but genuine heart transformations that result in a person becoming more manifestly loving. I say this because sometimes people can be motivated to do good suddenly, but if their hearts are not transformed, it won’t last.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV)
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
God has given us His Word and it is so that we can live by it, not simply keep it in our heads. We should search out His Word to know how He wants us to live as His followers. The world has its own standard, but we are following God’s standard. If you are battling pride, find out what God says about pride and its dangers. If you are struggling with anger, then let God tell you more through His Word. It is not only interesting to study about such topics, but it might surprise you how a verse may hit you hard in the right spot. God’s Word is always relevant to our life.
Psalm 119:18 (NKJV)
Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.
This is a favorite prayer of mine before I study the Word of God because wonder can produce significant change in a person. Those who cultivate awe keep their hearts warm and soft, and resist the temptations to grow cold and fall away. Seeing glory in His Word changes everything, the Holy Spirit moves in us to convict us strongly so that our hearts begin to be transformed and aligned with what God desires for us.
Some time back I quarreled with my parents about a matter and after that I felt regretful because I was not being a good testimony for God to my parents who are not believers of Christ. They know that I study the Bible and I go to church, but if to them I am the same as when I was a non-believer, then what kind of image am I portraying about Christ? My desire is to become more Christ-like and to show the world the love of God which is true love. It’s a tough but exciting journey of being molded by God. Every time I submit to God, I know that He shows up and does amazing things. He places me in situations to mold me, and everything is divinely appointed by my Father in Heaven. God doesn’t want us to be hypocrites, preaching good but acting out evil. He wants us to be set apart from this world, like lighthouses.
James 1:22 (NKJV)
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
God has called us to be doers of His word, not hearers only. Therefore I encourage you to continue to seek His Word, but with a heart that desires transformation, a heart that desires to be like Jesus. Our personal testimonies can sometimes be so powerful that we can reach out and soften a person’s heart to be prepared to hear and receive the Gospel. So let us submit to God our battles so that He can fight them for us. Let us repent and surrender all that we are holding back from Him, for He is able to do so much in us than we can for ourselves. Pray to Him, and I mean fervently pray. He looks into our hearts and He knows our bad habits and sins, but He is doing a work like no other, renewing our inward man day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16). Praise You, God!
Let us pray.
“Dear Gracious Father, search me and know my heart, try me and know my anxieties, and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Make my desires Your desires, let me set my heart on things above. Make me a doer of Your Word and not a hearer only. I pray that You mold me into who You want me to be, I am the clay and You are the Potter. I pray Father, that You produce genuine change in me and make me more manifestly loving, not for my glory, but for Yours. Father, open my eyes so that I may be in wonder of Your Word. You are beautiful in all Your ways, O God. To You be the glory! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
