In Christ

Ephesians 1:3-6
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,
having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,
to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.

God tells us in His Word that all have sinned and none of us are right in the eyes of God. Left alone, we are all enemies of God who will one day receive the complete outpouring of His wrath. By ourselves, we cannot expect to receive good from the righteous and holy God. When we start to realize how dire the situation we are in, we will begin to savor the great comfort from the many times “in Christ” is mentioned in the opening chapter of the Book of Ephesians.

Christ is our Mediator. He is the bridge of reconciliation between us and God. It is in Christ; through His mediation that we are entitled to God’s abundant blessings. Through Christ, we are blessed not with one, but with every spiritual blessing in the Heavenly places! We were once poor in our sins but in Christ, we are not only made rich, we are also lavished with all that Heaven could offer.

Christ is our Lover. He chose to love us not only before we had a being, but even before the world had a beginning! In Genesis 1:2, the Bible tells us “the earth was without form and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the faces of the waters.” At those moments of darkness and void, Christ already had us in mind. In the beginning where there was God and God alone, He had already purposed for us to be His people. That is how far-reaching God’s thoughts towards us are!

When God said ‘Let there be light” and commenced His work of creation, He did that with us in His mind. This is how special we are to Him. He created the world for us to commune with Him. In Christ, we are known and loved even before the world was known. Before the world was formed, God already had a desire for us to be His own so that He could bless us with every spiritual blessing in the Heavenly realm! How deep and unfathomable is His great love for us!

Christ is our Sanctification. It is interesting that when Christ had us in mind before the foundation of the world, He desired for us to be “holy and blameless”.  Notice that He desires for us to be holy according to only one standard – “before Him”, the absolute and ultimate measure of perfection. Often, we speak so much about God’s love and forgiveness that we miss out His very purpose for our election – sanctification. Christ chose us so that we can be like Him, so that we can be in union with Him. A Biblical understanding of God’s love for us coupled with the working of the Holy Spirit in our heart will always produce holiness. A heart that has been filled by Christ’s ever-present love through eternity will never have space for sin and the carnal world.

Let us pray.

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for lavishing Your love upon me even before the world had a beginning. You created the world with me in mind and You desire that I commune with You and grow to be like You in holiness. Thank You so much for reminding me of Your unending love for me and how precious I am to You. I know I have a special place in Your mind and I am uniquely created according to Your purpose and pleasure. Today, I take comfort in Your love for me and I allow this love to compel me to work out my salvation in fear and trembling, knowing that You desire for me to be holy and blameless before You. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
