We Must Attend To This

Proverbs 4:20-22 NASB
20 My son, give attention to My words;
Incline your ear to My sayings.
21 Do not let them depart from your sight;
Keep them in the midst of your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them
And health to all their body.

All of us desire to enjoy a full, abundant life and wholeness in our body as well as in all situations. God tells us where this can be found. In His Word.

What the pages of the Bible give us is more than a historical record. The words in the Bible are more than wise sayings. God’s Word is more than a message and the Bible is not just another book. It radiates life and breathes health “to those who find them” (Proverbs 4:22). This suggests to us that there may be people who miss out on the life and health found in the Word of God. This tells us that God’s Word needs our seeking to be found.

As followers of Christ, we must have it as a commitment and priority to seek the Word of God by giving attention to it, as Proverbs 4:20 tells us.

When we give attention to something, it becomes our priority and we set aside other things so we can give our time and focus to it. Many are the distractions that seek to undermine the effects that God’s Word brings to our lives. The enemy knows that if he can distract people from God’s Word, and keep us busy in life doing other things and attending to self-centered desires, this will keep the blessings of God’s life and wisdom from being in our life, and thereby keeping the Truth of God being made known to the world through us.

Have we been giving too much of our attention to the daily news headlines, stock market report and doctor’s report at the expense of God’s Word? Do not leave our Bible unopened on the coffee table. Give attention to God’s Word.

To do so, we must incline our ears to God’s sayings. We can hear the Word of God without really hearing it. We ought to lean in to God and incline our ears to His Voice through His Word. We must draw close to Him and His Word to listen to Him intently so that what He says to us becomes the dominant influence in our daily lives. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God, Romans 10:17 tells us. If we do not incline our ears to God’s Word, it cannot enter into us, our faith cannot be strengthened and we are then not able to build up the faith of those around us too.

What has your ear been inclined to? Commit to in every situation, get into a posture of humility, and tilt yourself to the Word of God.

Proverbs 4:21 also teaches that we ought to always keep God’s Word before our eyes and let it not depart from our sight. Our eyes are the gateway to our body (Matthew 6:22-23). If your eyes are on darkness and sickness, guess what your life will be filled with? Yes, it will be filled with darkness and sickness. But if the eyes of your heart are regularly on the Word, your whole life will be filled with His light and life and your body and life made whole.

Set your eyes not on the situation you are in but on Who God is and what He says He can and will do for you. Remember, when God’s Word always is within our sight, He is going to take us rise above any obstacle and struggle we see right before our human eyes.

Keeping God’s Word in our heart is to have a spiritual understanding of the Word. It is not a mere head knowledge or mental assent but is about allowing the Word to take root in our heart and allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to us personally.

Make room for His Word in the deepest part of your being. Plant the Word in you so that it cannot be lost. Treasure the Word. Let the Holy Spirit bring the Word alive and real in your life, inspiring you with wisdom needed for every situation. Then the situations that are in ruins can rise up to life and health all over again, by the power of His Word.

What would have happened if Peter never gave attention to the Words of Jesus in Luke 5 to launch into the deep waters and let down his nets? Peter would not have experienced the miraculous catch of fish that Jesus gave him. Peter might not have risen up to God’s calling to follow Him, and to build and advance His Kingdom.

These are the words of Peter to Jesus in Luke 5:5 NKJV, “…nevertheless at Your Word I will let down the net.”

Let us be true disciples of Jesus who always responds to His Words with, “nevertheless at Your Word, I will…”. This is the way we can enjoy and share with others the fullness of life, health and wholeness from our Lord Jesus.

Let us pray.

“Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your Word that brings life and gives healing and wholeness. There is no situation in my life that I cannot find the answer to in Your Word that is living and powerful. I thank You that as I hear and read Your Word, You are releasing life, healing and wholeness into my life. Father, enlighten the eyes of my understanding that each time I hear and read Your Word, I will receive and comprehend the revelation and wisdom from You that I need to walk in Your will and fulfill Your purpose for me. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”
