No Doubt No Gout

By Ken Lim

One night back in 2008, I was woken up during my sleep by a very sharp pain in the joint at my big toe. It felt like I had twisted my toe joint. So I started to reposition myself in the bed, hoping to reduce the pain. However, no matter what position I was in, the sharp pain persisted. I went almost without any sleep for the rest of the night.

I woke up in the morning and went to the clinic for consultation. The doctor’s diagnosis was that I was suffering from a gout attack. Gout occurs when there is a high level of uric acid in the blood. When this happens, urate crystals form and accumulate in one’s joint, causing inflammation, swelling and pain.

I went through a treatment process as prescribed by the doctor, taking medication, and watching my diet. Many types of food could lead to increase of uric acid in one’s body, so the doctor advised me to totally abstain from them to minimize possibility of gout attacks. It was a whole long list of food, including very common ones like red meat, mushrooms, bean products and salmon. For the following few years, I tried hard to avoid these food items. It became a great inconvenience when I had meals with other people. My parents and parents-in-law had to consider my ‘not-to-eat’ list when they prepared meals. Socially, it posed a hindrance too. I often had to excuse myself from certain food during gatherings.

Even with this, I still experienced gout attacks every now and then, always in my toe joint. I could not even put on my shoes each time it happened. The pain is simply indescribable.

This went on for a few years.

Until 27 May 2012 in our Church Service at River, our Senior Pastor, Reverend Dr. Stephen Tan, preached a sermon on the healing of the woman with a blood issue, as recorded in the Bible in Mark 5:25-34. There was then an altar call for those who wanted healing. However, I did not go forward to be prayed for. I had become so accustomed to my condition that I had accepted it as part of my life and saw no need for prayer to receive healing.

After the church service, during lunch, a brother in Christ who knew about my gout condition, found out that I didn’t respond to the altar call earlier. He offered to pray for me. By faith I received the prayer of healing, right at our lunch venue.

My lifestyle and mindset did not change after the prayer. I was still watchful over my diet, abstaining from food as advised by the doctor four years ago.

Until some time later, our Pastor, Reverend Dr. Tan said this to me, “Ken, you have received the prayer of healing and if you believe that you are healed, you should live as one that is healed. Have you done things to confirm your healing?” Up to that point, I was still very careful with what I ate thinking that a gout attack would happen if I ate the ‘unpermitted’ food.

My Pastor’s words had shown me how I still had been living like one with a gout condition though I had received the prayer of healing by faith. I decided to take a step of faith and began to experiment with the food that I had avoided for a few years. One by one, I began to consume food that would typically trigger a gout attack – beef, mushrooms, tofu, beans, lamb, salmon, and so on. Each time, I suffered no gout attack and every time, I gave thanks to God.

Over this period of time, I have witnessed myself how God already had healed me! Healing comes through our Lord Jesus and we receive it by faith. This testimony has also become a conversation topic with my colleagues and friends, where I share with them that Jesus heals!

Dear friend, Jesus heals. Maybe there is a condition that you or your loved one is having that needs healing. Years ago, someone prayed for me and with me. I received it by faith and have been healed by God. Today, I would like to be that someone praying for you and with you. Say this prayer with me, receive it by faith, and believe that God has healed you!

“Dear Heavenly Father, I believe that You are the Healer. I pray You come and heal the sickness and condition that I [or your loved one] am having. Help me to regain a whole and healthy body, so that I can continue to serve You and live out Your purpose for my life. I receive Your healing right now. Thank You, God. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”

I invite you to join us for our Church Service this Sunday. Let us journey through life together as a church family, growing in our faith together.
